You are spoilt for choice when it comes to all-in-one website builders that are geared towards small businesses or community sites. They’re built so that you can create websites, even if you have no design or coding experience, in a matter of hours.
However, unless you have some website experience, it can still be a bit bewildering when faced with options for things such as SEO, using “containers” or just simply connecting your calendar for bookings. Your average business is also too busy running their day-to-day to learn these things so it’s not a quick job for some users. There is still a learning curve if your main business is not anything to do with digital. This was the situation with St Peter’s Community Gardens who had a WIX website in need of a redesign and a new interface that would be easy to navigate by their target audience.
The brief was simply “don’t talk code” as St Peter’s had been bamboozled with previous offers to update their website. They simply did not know what they were being offered and just wanted a site they could edit and most importantly, something they were already used to using. It was important to explain what changes were needed in a clear and concise way so that the client could pick up the editing themselves without any additional training.
The WIX website they were running was very busy and crowded plus the navigation wasn’t easy to use. It was evident that a lot of ideas had been put onto the Pages but the navigation wasn’t very clear in simply making a booking or viewing availability on their calendar (which was blank). There were also large gaps between content blocks (turns out there were too many containers on the pages) and there were multiple hidden places to try and book their hall. Some forms did not work at all as an inbox had not been created for them. I wondered how many bookings had been missed by this.
As a community website built around their garden and bookable hall, their focus was on natural yet playful colours but their site was very white with dark green. I came up with a colour palette that would be softer and friendlier – exactly how they wanted to present themselves online.
Within a couple of days, I transformed the website into a more user-friendly, functional and mobile accessible site for their visitors. The client was delighted with the changes and I’ve had no questions except to book a time to run through the backend setup with some other members of staff.
