Helping to build an e-learning platform

I was invited to work on a large scale website migration project for an e-learning platform in the USA. I had not heard of 4-H before and it was the development team who pointed me to a particular Simpsons clip for a very quick intro! (Classic dev humour!)

4-H is one of America’s largest youth organisations, which helps its members with after school education programmes, workshops and camps in thousands of clubs across the USA.

The agency, which were redeveloping the 4-H website, were asked to help create a new e-learning platform called CLOVER and I was brought onto the team to help migrate hundreds of pages, courses and posts onto the new platform.

Working with stakeholders in the USA, a development team in Portugal and everyone else working in London and remotely (me and other devs), it was a juggle of timezones and scrums to get the project over the line.

I spent close to 6 months migrating huge amounts of data to a redesigned platform, working with a rejuvenated brand with new design assets, and rebuilding previously static courses to be interactive or gamified with quizzes, polls and videos.

All of these new pages and online learning courses needed to be presented to stakeholders in the USA and I was pleased to be chosen as the person who articulated the e-learning functionality to them.

The new site went live just after I left the project and has been a huge success since launch. 4-H has now expanded its learner base by including previously excluded socio-economic groups and there has been a 32% month-on-month growth in learners joining the platform. This American heritage brand now reaches over 6 million children nationwide.
