THE BRIEF
I first designed The UK Drum Show logo back in 2016. The logo design and promotional materials were used for 7 years and across 5 events to promote the show and the website. The brand has now grown to include a new Europe Drum Show (coming in 2025) and it was felt by the organiser that a refresh was required.
THE SOLUTION
A re-design, especially of your own work, can be quite tricky but after an in-depth call on the values and positioning of The UK Drum Show, the task became much easier. It was apparent that the logo needed a bolder look with a rock/punk feel with a burst of colour (previously just black and white). I decided to keep a drumstick element in the design (because show visitors tend to bring their own sticks to test out drums) but the drum shell was removed for the primary logo. (Although it was kept for a 3rd logo option) I incorporated a subtle ‘rock-on’ symbol in the ‘W’ which represents the horned-hand gesture, often associated with rock, hip-hop and metal music bands. It is also a popular community gesture shown between the professional drummers and younger players who share knowledge and experience at the shows. By intertwining a drumstick through the letters of ‘SHOW’ and reshaping the letters around it, the logo gained a powerful aesthetic. This logo is now being used for promotional materials and the website ready for 2024’s drum show in Liverpool.
